Frequently asked
How do I play?
Every box is a small board of wires around a transformer. Tap any piece and its whole ring turns a quarter turn. Turn the rings until current reaches every lamp. While your finger is down, the ring that will turn lights up, with an arrow showing which way.
- Dashed windows are sleeping — keep them dark.
- Chain rings pull the ring outside them along; gear rings turn it the other way.
- A nut holds a piece still; ½ rings turn half a turn; ↺ rings turn the other way.
Stuck? Hint says a little more each time you press it, and Shuffle again starts the box over.
What is tonight's box?
One new box every night, the same for everyone. You can play it right on your Home Screen with the large widget, on your Apple Watch, or ask Siri how it is going.
Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch
- Mac: click a piece to turn its ring; the ring under the pointer lights up first. Number keys turn rings too: 1 is the outer ring.
- Apple TV: swipe to pick a ring, press to turn it, press Menu to go back to the city.
- Apple Watch: tap a piece, or pick a ring with the Digital Crown and double tap to turn it.
- Game controller: the d-pad or left stick picks a ring, A turns it, B goes back to the city and Y asks for a hint. In the city, A opens the next dark box.
Does my progress move between devices?
Yes, if your devices use the same iCloud account: lit windows follow you. An unfinished box stays on the device where you left it.
Do I need Game Center?
No. Everything works without it and offline. If you are signed in, achievements track each neighbourhood, the nightly boxes and the whole city. There are no leaderboards.
How do I start over?
Settings → Reset progress. Lit windows, unfinished boxes and the logbook are cleared; tonight's box stays.
Accessibility
Every ring can be turned with VoiceOver actions. With Reduce Motion on, the flowing current and the opening logo stay still. Sound and haptics can each be turned off in Settings.
